iCryptogram
Layout
- There are four areas on the page
- The puzzle area which initially shows the puzzle letters below dashed lines. As you progress the dashed lines will be replaced by your choices. When complete the solved cryptogram should appear above the dashes.
- The size controls. Use these to increase or decrease the text size and scroll up or down within the puzzle area. You can also scroll by swiping over the puzzle area.
- Substitution letters. The letters available for substitution. When you use a letter it will move to the puzzle area and no longer appear as available.
- Puzzle control. Use these to get hints, show the answer, create your own cryptogram, get a new cryptogram etc.
Instructions
- Choosing Letters
- There are three ways to fill in a letter
- Click on the space where you want to put a letter and then click on the substitution letter
- Click on the substitution letter and the click where you want to put the letter
- Drag the substitution letter to the space where you want to put it.
- Erasing a letter
Click on the letter in the puzzle area erases it and moves it back down to the available letters
- Changing a letter
Click on your new choice in the substitution area and then click on the old choice in the puzzle area.
- Starting over
Click on the Clear button on the puzzle control.
- Getting hints
Click on the Hint button and one letter will be chosen for you and will either fill out a blank space or replace one of your choices if it was incorrect.
- Show the letter distribution
Click on the Frequency button and a grid will appear at the top of the page showing the number of times each letter appears in the puzzle. Clicking on a letter in that grid will highlight it in the puzzle.
You may reposition the grid by dragging it. To hide the grid click the Frequency button again.
- Timing yourself
Clicking on the clock button will start a timer which will stop when the puzzle is solved. You can pause and resume the timer but if you stop the timer it will reset to 0.
If you click the clock button again it will stop and be hidden. You may drag the timer to reposition it.
- Giving up
Clicking on answer button will reveal the solution.
- Getting a new cryptogram
Clicking on the New button will load a new cryptogram.
- Creating your own cryptogram
Click on the Create button and type in your quote. You will then be returned to the puzzle page. This is not very challenging since you know the answer. It is designed to let you enter a quote and then hand the device to another person to soslve.

- Determining Selected Letters
- If a letter in the puzzle area has a gray background, that space will be updated if you click on a substitution letter at the bottom.
- If a substitution letter is white it will be used when you click a space in the puzzle area
- If there are no white or gray areas no update will occur because you have not yet selected a source or destination.
